Soda Ash, also known as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), is the sodium salt of carbonic acid (soluble in water). Primarily used to remove tartrates in wine barrels or as part of the reconditioning of a suspected spoiled barrel.

Brief instruction on reconditioning spoiled barrel:  Fill the barrel half full with water as hot as you can get it. Then add the soda ash that has previously been dissolved in a little hot water at a rate of 2 grams per liter of barrel capacity {1.0 lb. in 2 gallons of water for a 60 gallon barrel}. Shake or roll the barrel until the solution is well mixed. Now finish filling with water as hot as you can get it. Bung the barrel tight and roll it around to agitate it. Let sit for around 12 but no longer than 24 hours. Then empty it and rinse several times until all the solution has been washed out.  Re-acidify barrel with citric acid solution {0.37 lbs per 60 gallon barrel} in a similar manner as above except drain but do not do a final rinse.
